Hybrid cardiac surgery center to be set up in Belarus

13.01.2020

Over Br96 million will be allocated to build and equip a hybrid cardiac surgery center at the Cardiology National Research Center, director of the center, chief non-staff cardiologist of the Healthcare Ministry Aleksandr Mrochek told reporters, BelTA has learned.

The hybrid cardiac surgery center will include diagnostic, in-patient, operating and intensive care facilities. It will be located in a new building. The project to construct the building has already passed expert review. Over Br96 million is to be earmarked for this project in line with the government innovative development program for 2016-2020. The Cardiology National Research Center has already developed a strategy to promote hybrid cardiac surgery in Belarus.

A hybrid cardiac surgery is a procedure that combines a conventional surgical part with an interventional part, using some sort of catheter-based procedure. The first cardiac surgical procedure was performed in Belarus in December 2018 in an ad-hoc interventional radiology suite. The existing operating and intensive care facilities of the Cardiology National Research Center have become outdated. Belarus has made great progress in interventional technology. “A decade ago we performed about a dozen interventional surgeries, now the number has risen to 17,000 per year.

In 2019 we saw a 18% increase in interventional surgeries year-on-year,” Aleksandr Mrochek said. Such surgeries result in smaller incisions, shorter recovery times, fewer complications and risks during the surgery and in the follow-up compared to traditional surgical approaches. The number of cardiovascular diseases increased in Belarus by 22%, up to 35,670 per 100,000 adult population in 2008-2018. Cardiovascular diseases account for 55% of deaths in the country, however the related deaths dropped by 5.9% down to 711,400 per 100,000 in 2008-2018.
