The sustainable development of the entire world secures the sustainable development of individual nations

A country cannot be competitive without sustainable development. The statement was made by the national coordinator on reaching the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Deputy Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Marianna Shchetkina as a regional SDG conference opened in Minsk on 6 June, BelTA has learned.

Marianna Shchetkina stressed: “The sustainable development of the entire world secures the sustainable development of individual nations. A country cannot be competitive in the future without sustainable development.” “We've borrowed the planet from future generations. This is why we should return it at least in the same state. It is the main indicator of sustainable development. Efforts to raise living standards of the people are not limited to money alone. I am talking about effective jobs, a healthy lifestyle, clean air and water, preserved biological diversity, and many other things,” said the senator.

Marianna Shchetkina drew attention to local and global partnership as one of the goals mentioned by the 2030 Agenda. “All of us should work on a scientific platform now. With this in mind international experts, scientists, representatives of scientific and educational organizations should get involved in the development of strategies for reaching the SDGs. They should become united in order to determine the direction of the work. Young people with their creative approaches should make their contribution, too,” Marianna Shchetkina was convinced. In conclusion she noted that the public awareness of the 2030 Agenda should be improved in a skilled and accessible manner. Because the Sustainable Development Goals can be implemented only if all the citizens pitch in.

The regional conference Strategies and Partnership for Reaching the SDGs is scheduled to take place in the Johannes Rau International Center for Education and Exchange in Minsk (IBB Minsk) on 6-7 June. Taking part in the event are 270 people representing government agencies, the private sector, public organizations and initiatives from Belarus and Germany, and international organizations. More than half of them came from the regions. These are the people, who work hard to assist with the sustainable development of their territories, enterprises, in organizations and initiatives. Participants of the conference are discussing topical aspects of implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and introducing their colleagues to the experience of Belarusian, German, and Ukrainian colleagues.
